Sleep and Sleepiness During Ramadan

Each year during the lunar month of
Ramadan,adult Muslims refrain from
eating,drinking,smoking and having
sexual activity in the daytime.This
intermittent fasting induces metabolic and
hormonal modifications (1,2)that can
alter nocturnal sleep and diurnal alertness.
Compared to non-fasting controls,cortisol
secretion is significantly higher at 19:00
and 21:00 h during Ramadan (3).
