Night symptoms such as itchy and constipation may disturb sleep and worsen sleep quality in patients with hemorrhoids. The aim of this study was examine sleep quality in these patients. Thirty patients with external hemorrhoids (15 males and 15 females) participated in the study. A control group comprised 30 healthy subjects (15 males and 15 females). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), which is an instrument with previously established reliability and validity, was administered to assess sleep qualty during previous month. Habitual sleep efficiency scores and global PSQI scores of the patients with hemorrhoids were significantly higher than the controls` scores. In patients with hemorrhoids, subjective sleep quality is poor. Constipation and pruritus may disturb sleep and worsen sleep quality. Improved sleep may be an important treatment focus in the clinical management of these patients.
